Where to stay for Nights of Lights: our one-bedroom shortlist

All five of our downtown one-bedroom units sit inside the lit part of downtown, and that is the whole decision in a sentence. Nights of Lights covers roughly twenty blocks of historic St. Augustine with white lights every evening from late November into mid-January, concentrated around the Plaza de la Constitución and the bayfront, and it costs nothing to walk through. What it costs is parking and patience. Stay inside the display and you park once, or not at all.
So the shortlist, in the order most couples should consider it: Historic St. Augustine Balcony Suite with Parking on St. George Street, then Cozy St. Augustine Apartment: Perfect for Couples and Night of Lights HQ, both at Pomar House on Cuna Street. Two more units at Pomar House round out the downtown options, and all five put you inside the display.
The balcony over St. George Street
If you want the lights to be the view rather than the destination, book the St. George Street suite. It's a one-bedroom apartment for two on the second floor, reached by stairs from the side of the building, with a private balcony looking down the street and live music drifting up most evenings. The Oldest Wooden School House and the City Gates are at the north end of the same pedestrian stretch. St. George Street is closed to cars, lined with shops and restaurants and strung with lights for the season, which means you step out of your door directly into the busiest part of the display without crossing a road.
The practical thing that sets it apart from the rest of our one-bedroom inventory: it comes with a parking permit for the Tolomato lot at 7 Cordova Street, left in the unit at check-in. In a season when every visitor downtown is circling for a space, having your spot sorted before you arrive changes the texture of the weekend. Inside there's a king bed, a smart TV, and an oversized desk facing the street, which guests use less for work than for sitting with coffee and watching the morning crowd thin out. Mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, complimentary coffee and snacks. Not a cooking kitchen.
It also happens to be the most reviewed one-bedroom we manage, with sixty-seven reviews and a rating just shy of a perfect ten. Make of that what you like, but it tells you the balcony is not oversold.
Four suites at Pomar House, and how to pick between them
All four sit on Cuna Street in a renovated Spanish-style building, all are one-bedroom second-floor apartments with a king bed, a kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker, and a washer and dryer in the unit. All are a short walk to the Plaza and St. George Street. The difference comes down to configuration and sleeping capacity.
Cozy St. Augustine Apartment: Perfect for Couples (Suite Two) sleeps two. One king, no extra bed, nothing to negotiate. This is the one to book if it's just the pair of you and you'd rather not pay for space you won't use.
Night of Lights HQ (Suite Four) sleeps three, because the main bedroom has a sofa bed alongside the king. Useful if a third person joins for a night, or if one of you reads late and wants somewhere else to land.
Entry at both works through a coded door: you get into the building, then use your code at the Pomar House Suites door, then the same code at your unit. Second floor, stairs only. The Modern Rose is on the ground floor, and if you mention you're staying upstairs you get a coffee free with any food order, which is a small thing that becomes a routine by the second morning.
The one trade against St. George Street: there's no long-term parking at the building. You can pull into the driveway to unload, then the Historic Downtown Parking Facility is a couple of blocks away at 1 Cordova Street, subject to availability. During Nights of Lights that garage fills, so arrive earlier in the day than feels necessary and then leave the car where it is until you go home.
What a downtown base actually buys you in December
Evenings. The lights come on after dark and the district stays lit all night, and the difference between staying inside it and driving to it is whether you can go back to the apartment at nine, warm up, and come out again at eleven when the Plaza has emptied out. Visitors who drive in make one long loop and go home tired. Guests upstairs on Cuna or St. George tend to make three or four short passes across a weekend and see more.
The walk worth doing at least once: Cuna or St. George down to the Plaza, then east toward the water, where the Bridge of Lions and the lit downtown reflect across Matanzas Bay. That bayfront stretch is where the photographs come from. King Street gives you the Lightner Museum's courtyard and the Casa Monica across the road, both dressed for the season.
If you'd rather be driven, the Old Town Trolley runs a Nights of Lights tour from the Visitor Information Center at 10 West Castillo Drive, departing every fifteen minutes from six in the evening. Cruisin' Tikis runs the lights from the water, leaving Camachee Yacht Harbor on Harbor Drive. Santa's Red Train starts at Ripley's. Book these ahead; they're the parts of the season that sell out while the lights themselves stay free.
Who sleeps where
Two people, lights out the window: Historic St. Augustine Balcony Suite with Parking. Sleeps two, balcony over St. George Street, parking permit included, kitchenette rather than a kitchen.
Two people, quieter street, full laundry: Cozy St. Augustine Apartment: Perfect for Couples. Sleeps two, Cuna Street, washer and dryer in the unit, coffee perk downstairs.
Two plus an occasional third: Night of Lights HQ. Sleeps three on a king and a sofa bed in the main bedroom, same building and same walk.
All three downtown suites are up a flight of stairs with no elevator, so if stairs are a problem for anyone in your party, tell us before you book and we'll talk through it honestly.
Booking a December weekend without regretting it
Reserve earlier than you think you need to. Nights of Lights is one of the busiest stretches on the calendar here, and the one-bedroom inventory downtown is five units across two buildings, not fifty. Dates, rates, taxes, fees and minimum stays all sit on the individual listing pages and change by the week, so check them against your own nights before you commit.
When you do, book direct. We've been running rentals in St. Augustine for more than twenty years, we're locally owned and independently operated, and we guarantee the best rate on our own homes. Every home is inspected between stays and cleaned to hotel standard. If the garage is full at ten on a Saturday or you want to know which night the Plaza is calmest, call us: there's a real person here around the clock, and we live in this city.
